A conversation on whether President Obama’s 2012 re-election results represented a national swing to the left got me wondering how this compared to past elections.

Laying out the numbers like this not only showed that the past half-dozen presidential elections provided far more moderate results than previous ones, it also presented an interesting dialogue about party struggles for social and political power over much of this country’s history.
